Experienced Hampshire based sailor Alan Roberts competes in Nantes, France from 2nd to 29th June.
This is the 50th edition of La Solitaire URGO Le Figaro, the singlehanded offshore sailing race recognised as the unofficial world championship of solo offshore racing, attracting the best sailors from around the world. This year it is made up of four legs ranging from 450nm to 615nm, with the longest course in race history at 2,115 nautical miles.
Roberts competes in his sixth Solitaire du Figaro race, and his hopes are set on a top five finish. He is up against stiff competition from 47 other sailors, including world class offshore racers Loïck Peyron, Armel Le Cléac’h, Michel Desjoyeaux, Jérémie Beyou and Yann Eliès.
For the first time the Solitaire du Figaro will be raced in the Figaro Beneteau 3, a brand new foil-assisted one design yacht. Roberts has been in this new boat since January and knows it’s going to be his hardest Solitaire du Figaro to date.
Roberts says, “I’m excited to get out racing and, with so many legendary sailors taking part, everyone’s out for the win. The new boat has been a massive leveller in the fleet, and it’s reenergised and motivated everyone. There’s less time to sleep or room for error, and I think any mistakes are going to be penalised greatly.”
