Magma Structures were recently called upon to provide technical composite engineering and manufacturing expertise to one of the Solent’s Fast 40+ yacht racing teams. The Fast 40+ fleet are currently competing in the hotly contested grand prix race circuit in the Solent.
Magma Structures were approached to upgrade the stiffness of the rig package by laminating additional high modulus carbon fibre onto the mast section; following the owners consultations with the original rig supplier.
Critical to the project were the tight deadlines in order to minimise disruption to the team’s training and race schedule. Magma Structures were asked to complete the project just three weeks ahead of the team’s key regatta, the Vice Admirals Cup. Within the tight timeframe, Magma Structures coordinated transport, removed paint and filler, prepared the mast surface to accept the new laminate, coordinated rig inspections, undertook the rig stiffening, painted and assisted in re-dressing the rig.
Magma Structures team of in-house engineers and composite production specialists with expertise in performance rig projects allowed them to deliver the rig with days to spare, allowing the race team to be out testing and training prior to the inaugural Fast 40+ event.
